SQL Server Instance installation prompt Specify a directory that is not compressed

Scenario 

SQL Server Instance installation prompt

“The specified directory, “C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\”, for the INSTALLSHAREDDIR parameter is not valid because this directory is compressed or is in a compressed directory.   Specify a directory that is not compressed.”

 


Solution 

1. Browse to the directory that you are installing SQL Server

2. In this case, I am installing to “C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server”

3. Open “This PC”/”My Computer” and open Program Files

4. Right-click on folder “Microsoft SQL Server”

5. Select “Properties” > Tab “General”

 6. Click on “Advanced…” button

7. Uncheck “Compress contents to save disk space”

8. Click OK button and click Apply button

9. Click Apply button

10. Select “Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files” and click OK button

11. If Windows prompt “Error Applying Attributes”, click “Ignore All” button

12. Restart your computer and install SQL Server Instance again.
